The original name of the island was Thera. It was named Sant’ Irini by the Venetians. Today the sole economic activity here is tourism and this is the high season so the narrow streets can be crowded to blockage.
We took a tour to Megalochora and Oia towns. At the first we were shown a vineyard. The do not use trellises here but grow the vines coiled around on themselves on the ground

We ate lunch in Oia in a cafe overlooking the caldera.

The bus let us of in the town of Thera and we walked around a bit and then took the cable car down to the port to return to the ship. You can go down by donkey but we had been warned that could be a little nerve wracking as the donkeys tend to trot on the way down, knowing that food and water await them.
