The first day out of Istanbul was mostly driving to Çanakkale. We went via the Gallipoli peninsula and viewed the beaches, cemeteries and memorials.

Most of our tour group are Aussies and Kiwis, so it was a pretty moving day for them; one eve found the grave of her grandfather.

In case you’ve forgotten, Gallipoli was Winston Churchill’s plan in WWI to control the Dardanelles and allow the British navy to get up to Constantinople and take the Turks out of the war. The plan failed after 8 months of fighting and tens of thousands of deaths.
